Quick answer: Mariah Carey Christmas 2026 officially begins at midnight on 1 November, the moment she “defrosts” from her yearly social media joke and declares “It’s Time.” It happens every single year, like clockwork, the second Halloween ends.
When Does Mariah Carey Defrost?
This is the question that everyone searches on Google and the answer is straightforward. Every single year on the 1st November at 12am. This joke came from Twitter in 2017 and fully became a tradition in 2018. Mariah is treated like a mythical creature by her fans who say she hibernates during the year and awakens at the very second midnight hits on Halloween.
She got involved in 2023. She posted a short clip of her being stuck in a giant block of ice while people with costumes used hair dryers to try to melt it. As soon as the ice breaks she comes out wearing a celebration costume and yells her famous catchphrase. “It’s Time”. This video received 4.3 million views within the first week and has become an annual event.
Mariah Carey Defrosting: What the Joke Actually Means
The Mariah Carey thaw meme is based around the idea that she spends the majority of the year (eleven months) frozen solid. She then wakes up to create Christmas music. This is a joke about how quickly ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ goes right back into everyone’s top songs once Halloween candy is finished.
This meme often involves Michael Bublé. Many people do this with him, giving him the same treatment as Mariah’s Christmas partner. Every year on TikTok, Instagram and X you will see posts going up between 31st October and 1st November. This has become an iconic date for fans.
The ‘It’s Time’ Christmas Song Tradition
“It’s Time” has become an actual indicator that the holidays have begun for millions online. As soon as Mariah uploads her video, you will instantly see Christmas playlists, store speaker systems and radio stations change to Christmas music within days.
This works because it gives everyone the okay! Many people feel uncomfortable putting up decorations before Halloween is even over. However, by having Mariah’s video act as the start signal. Once she is defrosted you can’t be accused of getting ahead of yourself.

November 1 Christmas Tradition: Why This Date and Not December 1?
A lot of people assume Christmas prep should wait until after Thanksgiving. Mariah’s tradition flips that on its head. By choosing 1 November, right after Halloween, she claims the entire holiday runway for herself — roughly eight full weeks of Christmas songs, shopping playlists, and viral moments before 25 December even arrives.
It also lines up neatly with how retailers already behave. Most shops quietly start swapping out Halloween stock for Christmas displays in late October anyway. Mariah just put a famous face, and a specific hour, on something that was already happening behind the scenes.
Why Does Mariah Carey Become Popular Every November?
On top of the streaming platforms and radio stations changing their playlists to include Christmas songs, this song is the most streamed Christmas song in recent history. The defrosting meme comes up every year so her name always goes viral at the same time as the song begins to rise. She also has a whole team working on her tour dates, merch releases and TV appearances so they will all be released during the same time so she stays in the news for longer than just the first couple of weeks in November.
The meme and the song help each other. It gives her lots of laughs and streams so you really can’t avoid Mariah Carey after Halloween!
All I Want for Christmas Is You: The Song Behind the Hype
None of this works without the song itself. Released in 1994, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has become one of the best-selling digital singles ever recorded. It didn’t even hit UK and US number one until 2019 and 2020, decades after it first came out, which shows just how much its popularity keeps growing rather than fading.
Every November, the song’s streaming numbers spike hard within the first few days. That spike is part of why the “defrosting” joke feels so accurate — it really does seem like the song, and Mariah along with it, was sitting in deep freeze all year, waiting for its cue.
Mariah Carey’s Christmas Time 2026: What’s New This Year
Aside from the viral video, Mariah has been keeping busy with her Christmas Time tour and residency in Las Vegas. Every year since 2024 Mariah has been going on tour and doing her residency. They usually start in late November and finish in mid December. In 2026 her tour expanded internationally, with dates in Brazil and visiting various places in England and Malta. This shows that her Christmas empire is a serious touring business.
Her Christmas dates do tend to sell out quickly so be sure to check her official tour website as soon as new cities are announced.
