If you tried to read or post fanfiction today and landed on an error page, you’re not alone. Is AO3 down? Yes — Archive of Our Own, the beloved fanfiction site run by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), went offline on October 29, 2026, and it may stay that way for a while. Here’s a simple, clear breakdown of what happened, why it matters, and when you might get your favorite fics back.

Is AO3 Down? What Is AO3 and Why Does This Outage Matter?

One of the biggest fanfiction archives on the internet, Archive of Our Own (or AO3 as fans know it) is a free, non-profit site that houses millions of stories that cover all kinds of fandoms from anime to classic books to video games. Many authors and readers consider Ao3 to be their creative home and therefore the loss of this site is a huge problem to the large and passionate community.

Why Archive of Our Own (AO3) Is Experiencing Issues

The outage itself was originally planned to be brief, however the OTW noticed signs of a security issue on AO3 and took it offline early on October 29th, 2026. It was originally intended to be brief however the situation has escalated.

According to the official Organisation for Transformative Works, AO3 went offline shortly after 3am ET. It was originally going to be a 12-hour downtime. However, maintenance has been extended to weeks.

Good news! Your stories, bookmarks and kudos are safe! AO3 has confirmed that nothing has been deleted from AO3 itself and donor information is separate. It’s been confirmed that user information cannot be accessed. However, AO3 has been very honest about this situation. They have admitted that whilst they do not believe the user database has been taken, they cannot completely rule it out. This database may contain information such as your username, email address, IP address and hash password.

It’s always good to be honest about these situations especially when millions of users trust us with their accounts. If you have an AO3 account it’s best to change your password when it comes back online.

Interestingly, there were issues with AO3 earlier in October. On the 14th, AO3 tweeted about issues with uploading and viewing icons on the site. This small issue could have been a sign that something bigger was going to happen.

When Will AO3 Be Back Online?

Unfortunately we don’t have an exact time, but based on their official status page the OTW currently expect AO3 to be down for at least 2 weeks. They do mention that it could take up to 4 weeks to fully get AO3 back online.

However, they do mention that they may be able to get AO3 online quicker (in a degraded state). This means that parts of AO3 might be up again, but don’t be surprised to see AO3 go offline periodically. It could still be taken offline temporarily during the time AO3 is partially online.

AO3 won’t be permanently offline, but you’ll just have to be patient! The best way to keep up to date is to visit their official status page.

What Should AO3 Users Do Right Now?

While you wait for the site to come back, here are a few simple, practical steps:

• Don’t panic about your work. The OTW has confirmed no data has been lost.
• Plan to change your password once the site is back online, as a precaution.
• Check the official status page instead of random social media posts for the most accurate updates.
• Be patient with volunteers. AO3 is run almost entirely by volunteers and donations, not a big tech company with unlimited staff.
• Avoid clicking suspicious links claiming to be “AO3 login pages” during the outage — scammers sometimes take advantage of situations like this.
