This is the device that actually pays for itself, and it’s the one I recommend prioritizing even on a tight budget once the basics above are covered. ENERGY STAR-certified smart thermostats save an average of 8% on heating and cooling costs, and real-world field data suggests many households save considerably more — commonly in the 15–23% range — especially if you previously never adjusted your thermostat manually.
Heating and cooling typically make up close to half of a home’s total energy bill, so even the conservative 8% figure adds up to real savings over a year, often enough to cover most or all of the thermostat’s cost.13 If your home doesn’t have a C-wire (the extra wire many smart thermostats need for constant power), check compatibility before buying — some models include workarounds, but not all HVAC systems support them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Buying a hub-dependent device before you have a hub. Check what a device needs before it’s in your cart, not after.
Ignoring the Matter label. It’s a small detail on the box that saves you from ecosystem headaches down the line.
Overbuying cameras before lighting or plugs. Security feels urgent, but lighting and plugs deliver more daily value per dollar for most households.
Skipping the thermostat because it’s the priciest item. It’s usually the fastest device in the whole setup to pay for itself.
